l the tools we manufacture are fully through hardened offering the maximum cutting characteristics for the grade of tool steel chosen.
Q2 ~ Are the tools completely hard & if so just how hard should they be for the best performance & longest life whilst in use?
Yes, all our tools are fully through hardened & tempered accordingly.
This allows the tool to be re-ground many times without loss of the hardness or cutting properties we apply to the tool during the hardening process.
Tool steel materials consist of a microstructure of small crystals called "grains" or crystallites which consists of the alloying elements used in the specification or grade of steel.
It is these various alloys that give the steel the unique properties for each application.
After hardening all tool steels must have an additional process as the steel is too brittle to be useful for most applications. All applications require that quenched & hardened parts be tempered ( heat treated at a low temperature ) to impart some toughness & to provide the correct cutting characteristics required for the tool.
Following the above all our tools are extensively tested & inspected to ensure they meet the criteria required to deliver the correct cutting performance necessary.

Tool steels are made to a number of grades for different applications.
Choice of grade depends on, among other things, whether a keen cutting edge is necessary, or whether the tool has to withstand impact or constant pressure loading during service conditions encountered. In general, the edge pressure & temperature under expected operation is an important determinant of both steel grade selection and the required heat treatment.

Tool steels are what generally refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to being made into cutting tools.
Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness).
Tool steels are generally used in a heat-treated & hardened state.
